Richard WeddletonAbout Richard Weddleton
A native of Boston, Massachusetts, descended from a long line of New England seafarers, Richard grew up and often vacationed near busy and exciting railroad lines, hence his enthusiasm for both railroad and maritime subjects, along with a love of automobiles, especially commercial vehicles, and airplanes.

Since 1968 he has been a resident of San Diego County.  In 1998 he retired early from careers in engineering and law to pursue full-time his lifelong avocation as an historic transportation artist.  Richard is a mostly self-taught graphite pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, and oil artist.  He has served as an officer of the Escondido Art Association and is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the National Maritime Historical Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, and the Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society.  Richard studied for many years with two San Diego area artists and mentors, internationally recognized wildlife artist Joe Garcia, and marine, railroad, and landscape artist and fellow-member of the ASMA Duane Light.

In most of his transportation paintings he strives to depict the drama and excitement, and often nostalgic intrusions of hard, man-made machines into nature’s soft landscape settings, such as ships plunging into ocean waves, locomotives disturbing quiet and fragrant pine groves, and airplanes navigating stormy skies.

Reproductions of Richard’s railroad, automotive, firefighting, marine, and aviation art paintings are sold at a number of galleries, gift shops at airports, and firehouse, maritime, railroad and model railroad museums in New England and California.
